Welcome

My name is Mr. Shawn Huls.  I have been teaching here at Holy Angels School for over 20 years. My two children have attended Holy Angels starting in Pre-K, with my youngest now entering his 8th grade year.

My goal for this year is to help prepare you academically for high school while having as much fun as possible.  I will strive to help make your last year at Holy Angels the best yet.

Let's go Angels!
Educational and Professional Background
I received my BA in Political Science from UCLA in 1995 and my JD from California Western School of Law in 1998.  I hold two California Teaching Credentials: Single Subject Social Studies and Single Subject Foundation Level Mathematics.  I began teaching 7th grade at St. Stephen Martyr School in 2000.  I came to Holy Angels in 2003, teaching 7th and 8th grade math, social studies, and language arts over the years. Prior to teaching, I worked briefly as an Estate Planning Attorney from 1999 to 2003.

Educational Philosophy
I believe learning occurs with the greatest success when someone wants to learn.  As a teacher, I feel it is my duty to promote that desire to learn.  I often find that this is best done by making learning fun.  I like to incorporate games and fun activities whenever possible to encourage student engagement and participation.  Students also need a safe and structured place to learn to get the most from their time in the classroom.  As such, I promote an environment of respect for each individual and rules that encourage personal responsibility.  Finally, as the 8th-grade homeroom teacher, one of the main goals for the year is to prepare students for the transition to high school.  As such, the academic rigor and procedures of 8th grade can be a change from previous years at Holy Angels.  The goal is for all students to leave Holy Angels feeling confident and prepared for their freshman year.

8th Grade Summer Math Practice _ Daily Warm Ups

Attached is the summer math packet.  You do not need to print it out.  Please do these basic fact warm-ups each day and time yourself.  It only takes 90 seconds and you may do the same one more than once.  For example, you can do #19 on June 19th and July 19th.  Try to do them every day during the summer.  Bring your notebook with you on the first day of school to receive credit.
